EVERYONE SERVES SOMETHING or someone. Who or what you serve ultimately defines who you are. But to answer the question, “Whose Servant are You?” is not as simple as it may appear. There are many competing “bosses” in our lives. We have those whom we serve in our families. We have those to whom we are accountable at our workplace. We are also subject to secular governing authorities. And we also serve ourselves because many of the things we do are for the purpose of our own survival and the maintenance of our lives. Sometimes it is difficult to prioritise our time and resources because all of these areas in our lives demand our attention.
How do we discern what we should be doing at any given time? For some this may be a time management issue. For others it is a question of values. But for all it really comes down to the question: “Whom are you serving?” “Who has the last word in your life?” Jesus made it clear: “No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.”(Luke 16:13)  We will all do well to examine the decision-making processes that lead to how we spend our time and resources. Are we asking for God’s wisdom? Are we asking what his will is in any given situation? When we do this we are in fact inviting him to have the last word and so truly become His servants if we indeed obey him.

“We must obey God rather than men!"
