Today we are having our annual church picnic, where everyone is welcome to participate.  It is always a great time together as a church family to meet in the park and get to know others.  In regards to food there will be more enough for everyone!  I am reminded of another picnic, known as the feeding of the 5,000, where there was more than enough left over (by the way, the Bible records that there were 5000 men, not including women and children (most likely a total 10,000 or even more!).  It was an amazing miracle with a message: just as God who fed His people with manna in the desert (bread from heaven),  Jesus was now declaring, “I am the bread of life” (John 6:35), the bread from heaven that is the provision for my people.  But besides what this incredible miracle revealed about Jesus, I believe he was also using it as a teaching moment for his disciples.  At one point he said to one of them “Where are we going to buy enough bread for these people to eat?” (John 6:5), but he said this to test them, knowing what he was going to do (v. 6).  And yet when his disciples suggested Jesus send the crowd away he said, “You give them something to eat” (Mark 6:37).  In a similar way, we are to learn from Jesus what he is saying to us as his disciples in the 21st century.  Just as He is the miracle for provision in our whole lives, he has called us to be the distributors of his provision. P.M.

Taking the five loaves and the two fish
and looking up to heaven,
he gave thanks and broke them.
Then he gave them to the disciples
to set before the people.

(Luke 9:16)
