Have you ever eaten a junk food type meal and stuffed yourself to the point of feeling sick? And then only a few hours later, someone offers you more food… even better food… juicy steak, for example. It doesn’t matter how good this “next course” is you simply cannot force yourself to eat anymore… This tells us one thing: when our stomachs are satisfied, we lose our appetite for more, even if it is better. In other words, there is only room for certain amount of food in a given time period.
This principle of feeding on food in the natural (for our bodies) is very similar to feeding on spiritual food (whether it is prayer, meditating on God’s word, etc.). Just as we direct our appetite for what kind of food we eat, how much or how little, we also direct our spiritual appetites. How is your appetite for the things of God? Specifically, how is your appetite and desire for meeting with Him in prayer and entering into His presence by faith? My prayer is that in these next few weeks, the Spirit of God will grip our hearts with His desire to show Himself to us in a more personal way. “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him and he with me.” Rev 3:20.
